A Bassin d'Arcachon day out that breaks the mould

Bassin d'Arcachon is all about the Pilat, Cap Ferret, oysters from Gujan, Andernos and the beach. But for the past few years, it's also been about BassinVR in Biganos – the only genuine free-roam virtual reality centre in the area. Just 5 minutes from Facture station, 15 minutes from Arcachon, 20 minutes from La Teste and Gujan-Mestras, it's the activity that gets people curious and talking.

The original idea was straightforward: offer a VR experience you won't find anywhere else in the region. Not a headset on a sofa, but a proper 200m² arena where you walk, run and hide with seven other players at the same time. The technology is called Zero Latency – it's the same used in theme parks in Tokyo and Los Angeles.

Activities on site

Free-roam VR arena 200m²

This is the heart of the concept. Up to eight players, around a dozen different games (Outbreak Rescue, Far Cry, Space Marine Warhammer 40k, Engineerium, Singularity, Sol Raiders and more). Each session lasts 40 minutes, recommended from age 13 for most titles, from age 8 for family-friendly ones like Engineerium or Jungle Quest.

Axe throwing

Six secure lanes, solid wood targets, balanced axes. A coach spends 5 minutes showing you the technique and then it's your turn. From age 15, £10 for half an hour, £15 for an hour. Popular for stag dos, team building and adult birthday parties.

VR escape game

Different from a traditional escape game because the settings are entirely virtual. You can do the impossible: cross chasms, manipulate objects that defy physics, change location in a second. Recommended from age 10.

Electronic darts and bar

Two professional boards, over 50 game modes, tournaments available. Plus a bar on site with soft drinks, local beers, cocktails and snacks. Often where the evening continues.

Who comes to BassinVR?

Friend groups from Arcachon, La Teste, Gujan-Mestras and Biganos mostly come Friday and Saturday nights. Families from Andernos, Audenge, Le Teich and Lège-Cap-Ferret prefer Wednesday afternoons and Sundays. Visitors from Bordeaux make the trip (40 minutes via the A63 A660) for birthdays, stag and hen dos and corporate away days. People from Landes towns like Biscarrosse, Parentis, Mimizan and Sanguinet also visit, especially during school holidays.

Bassin d'Arcachon when it rains

Another big advantage of BassinVR: when it rains on the Basin and the beach is no longer an option, the place is packed. It's 100% indoors, air-conditioned in summer, heated in winter. Parents relieved, kids delighted.
